TAWS Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the ST3400 TAWS?The Sandel ST3400 TAWS is a complete TAWS computer/display system in a box. It the only TAWS system that displays the terrain information in the pilot's primary instrument cluster and does not share a radar display. It includes the TAWS computer and an integrated full-color display built within a standard 3-inch instrument chassis. It can be installed as a direct replacement for existing Radio Magnetic Indicators (RMI). Is the ST3400 TAWS a Class A or Class B TAWS?The ST3400 TAWS can be configured to meet either Class A or Class B TAWS requirements, depending on the specific installation. Even in Class B installations the ST3400 has additional Class A features such as the excessive glideslope deviation alert. Please see the Sandel overview: TAWS - Who Needs It? Is the display technology the same as that for the Sandel SN3308 Primary Navigation Display? It is a 2nd Generation of Sandel's patented rear-projection display technology, improving brightness, viewing angle, and lamp life. It is the only avionics display which has a 180-degree viewing angle - the display has the same brightness and color cross-side as it does on-side, and 2000-hour lamp life. The projector uses a miniature active-matrix LCD display that produces an incredibly sharp, brilliant, and high-resolution image that is rear-projected directly to the face of the instrument. This technology has been proven in thousands of installations. Please see the Sandel overview: Sandel's Revolutionary "Light-Engine" Display Technology. Why develop a new display technology? It is the only display technology in the industry able to produce a large-screen 3ATI image mountable in the pilot?s primary instrument cluster. What are the terrain display modes? The ST3400 shows terrain three ways:
What other things does the ST3400 TAWS display? It overlays GPS/FMS flight plan, and airports/runways. Can the ST3400 TAWS show traffic? In the near future. Sandel is developing an interface with traffic collision avoidance systems from other vendors to display traffic data on the ST3400 display. Does the ST3400 TAWS support dual installations?Yes. Dual ST3400?s may be installed in a left-side/right-side configuration, much like pilot/copilot TCAS VSI. Can the terrain display be shown on an additional MFD?No. One of the advantages of the ST3400 TAWS is that it does not have to share a display with an MFD or EFIS system. Does the ST3400 TAWS support wind shear warning? No. The Sandel ST3400 TAWS fully complies with all FAA requirements for Class A and Class B TAWS systems. The FAA has not mandated wind shear warnings for any TAWS system. Are remote annunciators required for the ST3400 TAWS?As long as the ST3400 TAWS is mounted in the pilot?s primary field of view, no external annunciators are required. The unit will support external warning, caution, or master caution annunciation if so desired. Does it have an internal GPS?The ST3400 TAWS requires an external source for positioning information. This information can come from a GPS or FMS. What features assist in field maintenance? The ST3400 TAWS has an internal recorder that automatically records ten hours of flight data. This data can then be emailed and reviewed by Sandel for content in the event of installation or aircraft related malfunctions. What are the options for database coverage? The database is available in North America, European and Worldwide regions. Obstacle data is available for North America and Europe and is expanding to include other regions. Please contact Sandel for the latest information. Is there a CD-ROM available for the ST3400 TAWS?Yes. Please contact Sandel by phone at 877-726-3357, email at info@sandel.com or Request TAWS Demo CD from Sandel Avionics. The demo program will take you through sample flight scenarios and allows full operation of the ST3400. The CD-ROM also contains the ST3400 Pilot?s Guide and other documentation. |
